GRANT MISSION, IMPACT, RISKS & REFERENCE

Grant Mission:         Development of a DAO for Stacks aligns with the general goals and ethos pretty much by definition. Once we have bootstrapped the DAO and reviewed our developer fund we will be in a position to begin disbursing funds to contributors directly via the DAO. The Ecosystem DAO UI and tooling will be open source and released under permissive licenses. They can thus be used by other community entities to start their own DAO.

The project helps with the acceleration of the adoption of Stacks on two fronts. Firstly it is a way it offers a means to deepen the sense of ownership of the Stacks community over the evolution of the Stacks project. On another front we expect that the rich features, delegate voting, off chain voting etc, and extreme modularity and flexibility of the underlying Executor DAO Clarity code will catch the imagination of developers in the EVM space to consider learning Clarity.

This Ecosystem DAO will be a set of tools through which members of the Stacks community can contribute to debates and have input into key decision making processes, one example being votes can form part of the activation criteria for SIP standards. It will also make it easier for community members to successfully launch and bootstrap their own DAO.

Grant Impact:               The grant will pay two independent Clarity researchers to perform activities of the Core Team and provide oversight for the sunrise period. The payments will be made monthly at 1000 USD per month over a period of 6 months. The responsibilities will be advisory, contributing Clarity code here and there, and entail around full 3 days per month.

Grant Risks:                          Technical : DAOs are complex with many moving parts. New proposals can impact and change the protocols by activating and deactivating different extensions. The risk of hacks is well known and has been well publicised. Hacks and complexity make happy bedfellows and this carries risks for DAO projects.

Community : The DAO requires community engagement in order to be successful. Many DAOs fail for example because they fail to reach quorum or suffer from the tyranny of the minority voter problems.

Governance/Legal : DAOs do net yet have recognised legal status in most jurisdictions. Debates are ongoing about the role of the governance token as a security or utility cf recent SEC jurisdiction definitions.

Support Link:                                     Marvin has worked on btc.us, proposed several SIP. MIke built the thisisnumberone, risidio and crash punks projects.

Both have contributed code to the CLarity Lab:

👋 @radicleart
Thanks for your application! We will do a pre-review and let you know if we have any immediate questions. In the mean time please refer to our review schedule here for a detailed timeline and response dates.
Best, Will

Happy to inform everyone that Ecosystem DAO is live and we are now refining the wording of the proposal for the community vote on the 2.1 upgrade. The live site is at EcosystemDAO on Mainnet

If you are keen to try the DAO out we have a working replica on testnet at EcosystemDAO on Testnet.

We have an active channel in Stacks Discord Server #ClarityLab where can come and ask us anything.

This has been a complex project - involving work on 20+ Clarity contracts, an open API and a brand new Svelte application.

All the code is open source and can be found in the following github repositories;

This is critical project for the Stacks 2.1 release and beyond! Given the time sensitive nature of this project, should we process this grant outside of the regular timeline? @will-at-stacks

will-corcoran commented 1 year ago

Hi @igorsyl - I agree, it is critical! Fortunately, this grant was already approved and completed. I just asked the team to submit an application here because it was originally submitted on a different platform.

Seconded :+1: Really hoping we can use this for the Stacks 2.1 activation.
