GRANT MISSION, IMPACT, RISKS & REFERENCE

Grant Mission:         Digital Twins are NFTs that are permanently linked to physical counterparts. They allow for transparent ownership and proving ownership of real-world items easily. Digital Twins make this possible by utilizing special low-cost NFC tags compatible with all modern phones. The owner simply scans the tag to claim the NFT. If the object is later sold on a secondary market, the new owner scans the object which causes the NFT to move from the seller to his or her wallet. (Scan-To-Own.)

What makes Digital Twins unique is that they function in a completely decentralized fashion. Unlike previous "physical NFT" projects that utilize conventional NFC tags or QR codes that link to a central website. Instead, Digital Twin tags produce a cryptographic signature that cannot be falsified. It is this signature that triggers the NFT transfer in a Digital Twin smart contract.

Digital Twins are designed to truly merge physical & digital experiences for the first time. This is our first step toward building a real-world metaverse and a full-circle digital economy. No ecosystem has seen such a platform, which means it is not just a first for crypto but also for Stacks. The community will benefit as it allows anyone to create such NFTs on the Stacks chain and build novel experiences on the technology.

Grant Impact:               - At least 2 Stacks Community NFT projects launched a digital twins collection.

Grant Risks:                          The main challenge for us is integrating the tags with web3 applications as it obscure and tough to set up. However, we feel confident in our ability and have had some early success in preliminary experiments. The project also depends on Stacks 2.1 features: any delays will affect the project.

Support Link:                                     The link shows a very early demo of a physical object with a digital twin attached. The NFT in question is transferred via a BNS name. NFTs will inevitably bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds; it would be great to see Stacks at the forefront in this area. +1

louiseivan commented 1 year ago

Evolving Bitcoin NFTs beyond the hype and pure speculation is the next logical step for the Stacks ecosystem to take in order to contend with other flourishing NFT ecosystems.

While we can't deny the fact the sound basis valuation of purely digital NFT projects, we should still acknowledge that current NFT projects launching are derivative and unoriginal, which will lead to decreasing user retention which is happening now. As the 'Physical' NFTs or scan-to-own are still nascent as web 3 category, the ecosystem has a significant opportunity to unlock more value and win.

This new concept will lead to various innovative solutions not just for brands, creators, and artists but also for developers to build more use cases for Bitcoin NFTs.

This is awesome @MarvinJanssen @louiseivan love the concept video showcasing what the IRL experience is like. Allot of ways for us to co-support and add value through the tooling we're providing with the droplinked libraries and repo's.

I love this idea as I have always believed that NFT has to move away from just "art" and what @MarvinJanssen & @louiseivan are proposing here is surely moving in the right direction. What is interesting is that developement here will also likely benefit other products/projects that is already on Stacks such as NeoSwap and I know from reading John Ennis tweets, they are preparing for such a future where NFT linked to products/assets in real life can be traded on the platform. This is certainly the way forward.

100% Supported as this is something we are currently exploring with an NFC provider and will help to enhance/ease the experience for both developers and owners. Need to connect and catch up with you guys @louiseivan @MarvinJanssen

Hello @MarvinJanssen

Thank you for the application and for your patience with the grant review process. We did a thorough review of all of the applications (each application received an average of 6 reviews from members of the Grants Review Committee).  However, after much consideration, we decided not to fund any of the Cohort 19 grant applications as we did not feel they aligned with critical priorities core to the development of the Stacks blockchain.

We invite you to please read this blog post we authored to help elaborate on the reasoning behind this decision and clarify the current mission of the Grants Program.

Thanks in advance, Will Stacks Foundation Grants Program Manager
