Here's the extent of the previous source data: screen shot 2015-06-15 at 5 04 43 pm

It's higher-resolution than what I'm using now for the world. Unfortunately, the categories seem to be fairly different between the two rasters. It would only look weird where the two rasters are up against each other. Unfortunately the old data cuts off in Mexico... otherwise I could maybe use the old data for all of North America and make the transition in Panama somewhere. But it looks like I need to make the transition along the US-Mexico border.

Actually, it won't look too bad in most places. Maybe just awkward at the border with Baja California

Or, I could figure out a way to "feather" the edges of the North America raster so that it becomes gradually transparent as you go further south in Mexico, eventually transitioning fully to the lower-resolution landcover by the time it reaches the end of the high-resolution raster.

But then I'm getting too complicated, and I'm trying very hard not to put too much effort into the landcover part of this!

Oh, never mind any of that. I found a higher-resolution global dataset here: http://landcover.usgs.gov/global_climatology.php

That's about 0.5km resolution, which is better than the 1km used in the old terrain style. So I'll just use that.
