@almccon looking at Natural Earth 1:10m today I remembered there are polygons for bathymetry, we could try using the 200m polygons and see how that looks. Or perhaps using a combination of hillshade bathymetry with an inner glow on the ocean polygons to hide the undesirable artifacts.
I'm starting to feel like the water needs a little oomph. Obviously bathymetry would be great if we could avoid the artifacts at the edges. But perhaps we should consider something simpler. Maybe just a halo or something around the coastline?
