New "Note 1" on every launch/refresh of the web app in Firefox #1890

Closed DominikBritz closed 1 year ago

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

Describe the bug I'm using Standard Notes on iOS app and on the web app via Firefox. Every time I start the iOS app, a new Note 1 gets created.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Start the iOS app
  2. Open Standard Notes in Firefox on desktop
  3. See new Note 1

Expected behavior No Note 1

The modified date you see in the screenshot is exactly the time I opened the iOS app.

Hi @DominikBritz,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I'm afraid that I wasn't able to reproduce this issue, but I'll keep note of it. Can you try the following?

Please right-click anywhere on the page, click Inspect Element, click on the Console tab, and share a screenshot of the console log in case there are any errors highlighted in red.

Another thing that might help is exporting a decrypted and encrypted set of backup of your notes via the Account menu on the web app, and then signing out of both devices and signing back in. Please let us know if that helps.

Thanks, @JaspalSuri,

Here is the screenshot: 2020-12-17 10_38_59-Window

I'll test your second idea and let you know the results.

JaspalSuri commented 3 years ago

Thank you for taking the time to share that, @DominikBritz. I look forward to seeing the results!

I signed off from all of my devices (iPad, iPhone, Firefox on my second PC) and currently using Standardnotes only on my primary Windows 10 Laptop with Firefox. This morning, after starting Firefox, a new Note 1 appeared.

  1. While I think I disconnected all my devices, I'm not 100% sure. Is there are an overview where I can see all of my connected devices?
  2. Is there any log I could enable and send to you?
JaspalSuri commented 3 years ago

Thanks for taking the time to do that!

I'm afraid that this currently isn't possible, but we plan on adding session management settings in the future.

I'm also afraid that the console log that you've already provided is the only log that you can provide when using the web app. Can you check it again to see if says anything different?

Can you try downloading and installing the desktop app and let me know if you can reproduce it from there as well?

Can you share your list of browser extensions/addons here or email them to help@standardnotes.org (or standardnotes@protonmail.com)?

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

I'm currently using the desktop app as well as the iPhone and the issue did not reoccur. Hence, the problem is the web app itself or something in Firefox like an addon that interferes with the web app.

List of add-ons:

Hi @DominikBritz,

Thanks for the list of extensions! I'll try to reproduce the issue on my end and get back to you ASAP.

JaspalSuri commented 3 years ago

Hi @DominikBritz,

Another user reported a similar issue on our Slack and is using Bitwarden. Can you try temporarily disabling the extension or disabling the autofill feature to see if that resolves the issue? I wasn't able to reproduce the issue even with that setting enabled.

JaspalSuri commented 3 years ago

Hi @DominikBritz,

Is the app in a tab that is pinned by any chance? Sometimes that results in strange behavior for reasons that currently are not clear to us. Someone on Slack said that they were and we'll see if they stumble across the issue in the future.

Edit: it looks like this issue is similar to standardnotes/forum#2066, and a screenshot by the user shows that they're not using a pinned tab.

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

Hi @JaspalSuri ,

I'm testing and let you know the results.

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

@JaspalSuri

I can't reproduce the issue anymore. Standardnotes is working fine in a pinned and unpinned browser tab for a few days now. I'm not aware of any changes, though.

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

Well, shortly after sending the message above, a new Note 1 appeared. Standardnotes is running in a pinned tab.

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

Did not happen again for 9 days.

JaspalSuri commented 3 years ago

Hi Dominik,

Thank you for all of the updates! The dev team has made some enhancements to the web app to better detect when it's in a pinned tab and behave/respond accordingly. 😃

Have you restarted Firefox at all within those 9 days?

DominikBritz commented 3 years ago

Likely not, but I'm not 100% sure. I shut down my PC at the weekend and saw a new Note 1 this morning after startup.

MartinCa commented 3 years ago

I still seem to be getting this issue as well in Firefox with a pinned tab and I am using the Bitwarden extension as well.

My Firefox console has this: Screenshot 2021-03-05 175056

Latest "Note 1" I got was literally minute ago when I started Firefox just now: image

JaspalSuri commented 3 years ago

Hi @MartinCa, thank you for sharing those errors with us and for letting us know! Do you have the auto-fill feature enabled in Bitwarden? Are you able to reproduce the issue with it off or the extension disabled?

MartinCa commented 3 years ago

Hi @JaspalSuri, Thanks for you reply. Auto-fill is disabled in Bitwarden.

Seems like this issue is unlikely to receive more interaction.
