Windows: Desktop window completely blank coming out of standby 3.181.4 #3339

Describe the bug Application window is completely blank coming out of Windows standby mode. Windows 10, desktop app version 3.181.4

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

HI @andy-goryachev, can I ask you to try a clean reinstall of the app as an initial step? You can do this by following the uninstallation instructions first, then download the latest installer again from our website's homepage.

Looks like it might have been fixed in 3.181.23. Let me monitor this for a couple of days, I'll close the ticket if the issue won't reappear.

I see, though thank you for trying out the initial step. Do you currently have a passcode lock enabled on the app? If so, can I ask you to test if this occurs even without the passcode enabled? I'm wondering if it might be an issue with the passcode authentication box after the computer comes out of standby mode

I don't have passcode lock enabled.

Is it possible to see the history of local updates? This might help identify a change which caused the problem. I think it all started either with the update to 3.181.4 or perhaps an earlier one, but I am not sure.

The plot thickens: occasionally the app comes up completely blank after it stays minimized for a while. 3.181.24 on Windows 10

I see, after the app goes into a blank screen, can I ask you to try checking the console in the developer tools for any error output that might help the team figure out the cause of the issue?

@effieeee I think you might have misunderstood the problem. The problem is that the window is completely blank, no UI elements are visible, no right click context menus are possible. It is a desktop version, I cannot use the browser to open the console or dev tools.

Hi @andy-goryachev, my apologies, I was under the impression that the developer tools might still be accessible through the top menu, or via the Ctrl + Shift + I shortcut. However, there was actually a recent confirmed issue on Windows which caused a blank screen on initial launch during one of the updates. This was subsequently fixed on v3.181.32, as mentioned in #3363. Can I ask if your issue still persists on that version?

came out of sleep with a blank screen again. 3.181.35

It is possible that what triggers the issue is minimizing the application before putting the machine on standby.

The length of standby is also important: if I put the machine on standby and wake it up after a few seconds the issue cannot be reproduced, with or without minimized window.

Curiously, the app says (in the main menu -> Updates) "Latest version 3.183.22"

Hi @andy-goryachev, it's been a while, I do apologize that we were never able to follow up on this. I'll re-test this on the latest version as well, but just to make sure that I'm not missing anything while testing, do you also have the Minimize to tray on close option enabled?

Hi @andy-goryachev, just a short update on this, I'm afraid I haven't been able to reproduce this yet on the latest version, both with minimize to tray enabled and disabled. I also tried lengthening the standby time considerably, covering more than 12 hours, though the app window still appears normal after coming back on from standby.

While the developer tools can't be summoned through the top menu when the window is blank, I wanted to check if using the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + I can still bring it up on your end? I'd like to know if the app is completely unresponsive, to the point that even the developer tools can't be accessed.

Ctrl + shift + I does nothing.

I can only close it via the popup menu in the task bar.

I am trying to find exact scenario to reproduce. It's always minimized, but sometimes it come back after standby alive. I wonder if it starts happening when the computer goes through more than once standby cycle?

Hmm, alright, let me see if I can test this with multiple periods of standby within a day, though you also mentioned that the standby period can't be too short, is that right?

Thank you @effieeee for continuing effort and sorry it takes too long. We have bugs that live in JBS for decades...

A single short standby period does not seem to reproduce the issue. Sometimes a single overnight standby period does not seem to reproduce. Perhaps it's the multiple standby periods which include a wake cycle where the app is not maximized and in fact never touched?

One more thought: it started happening around a specific date. Perhaps there was a change in the platform (is this Electron?) that caused it?

I'll keep that in consideration as well, but reverting to a version of Electron from that far back is no longer an option I'm afraid.

More info: had the app maximized and edited a note Saturday Last modified: Sat Feb 24 2024 10:12:27 AM the app was not maximized or used on Sunday. This Monday came back to a blank screen.

So perhaps it needs two standby cycles and no activity in between to reproduce?

Hi, so far I haven't reproduced it with two standby cycles, but am I correct in understanding that this recent incident you recorded happened on a fresh boot of the device? That is, the device did not come from standby before you relaunched the app in the first step?

fresh boot: no. this is a desktop machine that stays on for months, going to standby at the end of each day.

is there a command line setting which would enable logging to a file, or maybe a special build that does it?

Hmm, if you open the data directory on the app as shown below, there is a folder named logs, which will contain log files for the app.

Congrats on the acquisition!

Just wanted to let you know that I have not seen this issue occuring with 3.192.4 for about a week. There seems to be an update to available 3.192.13, if it does not happen there, we can consider the issue resolved.

have not experienced the issue since 3.192.4 currently on 3.193.2 looks like it might have been fixed. woo hoo!
