Unable to change file location Automatic Encrypted Text Backups #3421

Open jpwuk19 opened 8 months ago

jpwuk19 commented 8 months ago

Settings > Backups > Automatic Encrypted Text Backups > Change Location does not result in a changed location (as selected) but instead results in "Not Set". When the setting is toggled off and on it defaults back to original file location.

Apple M2 Silicon, Sanoma 14.1.2

Hi @jpwuk19, may I know if you’ve tried reinstalling the app as an initial step? Please also follow the uninstallation instructions for the app first, to ensure that you get a clean install later on

I'm was having this issue as well but after following the uninstall instructions above and reinstall the software, I was able to change the location of the encrypted auto backups for both text and files.

Having the exact same problem on my fresh install of Windows 11. I also uninstalled and checked appdata and registry for left behinds, nothing.

effieeee commented 3 months ago

Hi @kruxarn, I'm afraid I haven't been able to reproduce this for the app on Windows 11, though may I also ask for any additional screenshots of the errors you get when you try to change the backup location? Is it the same as the ones described by the one who originally made the post above?

kruxarn commented 3 months ago

Default location: DefaultLocation

Not Set: ChangeLocation

It doesn't matter where I point, it always says 'Not Set'. "..\StandardNotes\Text Backups" folders are created at the new location, but nothing happens when I click 'Perform Backup'. And if I close settings, it automatically reverts to the default location again. The same error occurs if I start SN as an administrator as well. Other Windows 11 installations I've tried this on work fine. This computer has a fresh installation of Windows, and I'm not keen on reinstalling it just for this issue.

Thanks for providing screenshots of the error, and more details to clarify how the issue behaves at the moment! If you'd rather not try a reinstall for now, you can also try clearing the site data on the app in case it can still help:

  1. Click on the top left menu, then choose View > Toggle Developer Tools. dev tools desktop

  2. Expand the window until it reveals a button for tab named Application.

  3. Click on Storage.

  4. Click on Clear site data. Clear-site-data

  5. Relaunch the app, and sign in again, then check if the issue persists when trying to change your backup location.

No change, image

I also set up a new user account in Windows to check if it would resolve the issue, but the problem persisted.

Hi @jpwuk19, I'm sorry to hear that the issue persists. To compare with your other Windows 11 devices though, I wanted to ask if the default location also falls under OneDrive in those devices? I was wondering if using a cloud synced folder might have anything to do with the issue, though if this is not the case, can you also check if the developer tools might contain any additional error information whenever you try to change the backup location?

Desktop App

  1. Click on the top left menu, then choose View > Toggle Developer Tools, or use Ctrl + Shift + I

dev tools desktop

  1. Once the Developer Tools window is open, click on the Console tab on top, then try to change your backup location again.
  2. Check if the Console will record any additional error output, and take a screenshot if it does (as in the sample screenshot below)

Problem solved, it was Windows Defender Controlled Folder Access that denied SN from saving the change.
