Cannot preview pdf files #622

Unable to preview pdf files in app. I get this error every time.

Standard Notes version 3.20.1 Pixel 4a - GrapheneOS

Are you able to preview the same file on desktop/web?

Yes, I can. It is not just this file, it is any pdf file.

Hmm, we can't replicate this on our end. Perhaps it's any pdf file uploaded from a certain device? Can you try getting a PDF file and upload it from desktop/web, and see if you can then preview it on Android?

The pdf files were uploaded from desktop.

I suspect the cause lies might lie with GrapheneOS?   But not sure how.   It has it's own pdf viewer but I've installed other pdf viewer a and it makes no difference.

My wife has same phone as I do but with stock OS. I could log in and try from there.

Exactly the same problem using my wife's phone.   Perhaps a problem with my account?    I will try with another account...

I just tried it using a second account and it works. So something to do with my account. What can you suggest to fix it?

Hmm that's strange. What about other file types—images/videos—do they preview well?

So you signed out of your main account on mobile, and signed into another account (perhaps your wife's), and then uploaded a PDF from desktop to that second account, and still could not preview it from either phone? What is the other phone model and OS?

Not quite.

I first signed into my main account on my wife's Pixel 4a and reproduced the problem immediately.

I then cloned SN to the Island on my Pixel 4a and signed into a secondary account. From there I uploaded a pdf and was then able to preview it.

If I do the same thing on my main account however, then I get that error.

I can't fathom quite yet how it can be account related 🤔 This is a new feature however so it certainly could be. It's just unclear right now how it could be.

Could you try this PDF file, just so we can have a common root? I looked up "sample pdf file" and this was the first result: http://www.africau.edu/images/default/sample.pdf

Ok, so that pdf file uploaded to main account I cannot preview it. Uploaded to secondary account in work profile and can preview no problem

Perhaps it's worth mentioning that I can download and then open pdf files just fine. I just can't preview them.

I've tried a few more things to try to narrow down the problem - if possible. But I'll start with a summary of what I have tried so far....

  1. Log into SN on my phone - cannot preview any pdf attachments from within SN.
  2. Log in from desktop - works as it should.
  3. Log in from my wife's phone - same result as my phone.
  4. Log into a secondary SN account on my phone using work profile - works as it should.
  5. Export backup from main account using phone then sign out of main account and into secondary account (from main profile) - import backup - upload new pdf file - unable to preview it.
  6. Delete and re-register secondary account - sign back in in main profile - upload a pdf - cannot preview; so perhaps this is not account related as first appeared.
  7. Sign back into secondary account in work profile - works as it should.
  8. Sign into main account in work profile - WORKS AS IT SHOULD; Not account related.
  9. Sign into secondary account from wife's phone - cannot preview pdf attachment.

Both phones are Pixel 4a and neither has ever been rooted. Wife's phone is stock Android 12.1. It should be the same as any number of other Pixel 4a devices that are 'out there'.

  1. In main profile, sign out of secondary account and back into main account - SUCCESS! - The problem seems to have gone away but why???

Hmm honestly hard to determine right now. As and if we gain more user reports of this we'll be able to draw out some patterns.
