Hi @stark-t

UFZ contracted a lawyer company and their report indicates that under the German jurisdiction the AI weights do not represent derivatives of the original images and can be published, especially in the context of scientific research. This also is suggested by the report from the legal department of UFZ.

Here is also an important legal reference: https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_urhg/englisch_urhg.html#p0461 Botht he legal department and the lawyer company refer to "data mining" for the field of machine learning/AI training.

Section 60d Text and data mining for scientific research purposes

(1) It is permitted to make reproductions to carry out text and data mining (section 44b (1) and (2) sentence 1) for scientific research purposes in accordance with the following provisions.

(2) Research organisations are authorised to make reproductions. ʻResearch organisationsʼ means universities, research institutes and other establishments conducting scientific research if they

  1. pursue non-commercial purposes,

  2. reinvest all their profits in scientific research or

  3. act in the public interest based on a state-approved mandate.

Given this context, I suggest that we publish the YOLO weights. I can also prepare a notebook as a tutorial how to make use of such weights for a given folder of images (people expressed interest in trying out our weights on their images). I'll work on this and then send it to you for review.
