[RFC] Request for Submissions: Stash Logo #2049

Stash Logo

Scope and Requirements

I would like to request candidates for a replacement Stash logo. Our current logo is used inconsistently and is easily confused with other meanings and projects. We want to refine our logo so that we have a single, definitive, high-resolution or vector copy of the logo from which we can automatically derive all other resolutions and formats.

We shouldn't stray TOO far from the current 'box' concept, and we definitely don't want to convey any adult themes with our logo. Your creations should be AGPL licensed so that they are usable by the project.

It should be something that scales well and is appropriate in a variety of contexts, listed below:

Application Distribution needs:

Current macOS Current Windows

Web app needs:

I'm too hopeless as an artist to draw up any examples, but one thing I've always liked about the name Stash in this context is the double meaning/pun with the phrase p*rn 'stache. I think adding a mustache to the artwork could be a good way to make the logo pop, give it a little more personality, maybe a bit more color. Well, at least compared to a plain brown box. There's only so much you can do with that.

QxxxGit commented 2 years ago

I like the idea of the mustache pun, maybe with sunglasses to suggest 'incognito'.

I do wonder if there is a bit of confusion using a box at all given that Stash Box is a different entity. When I first started using Stash, it wasnt immediately clear what the difference was between Stash and Stash Box.

So perhaps something different? An icon that displays media and its consumption in different forms (old school VHS, magazines, a TV, or more modernized media icons for videos and images). Something with more color for sure to make it pop.

philpw99 commented 2 years ago

Just came across this icon, so I added a little title to it. Seems quite fit.

ALonelyJuicebox commented 2 years ago

Right but I'm sure someone owns that icon? It would be rude (at a minimum) to commandeer the IP like that...

kermieisinthehouse commented 2 years ago

Submitting this as my submission, might add some touchups later. Perhaps a VHS tape leaning up against the box?

AdultSun commented 2 years ago

VHS tapes? And you said the term "porn stache" was too dated?

In all seriousness, I do like this one. I think adding something to it like a VHS tape or an old magazine could work, but to reiterate my point from Discord on here, I feel like simpler will often be better here. If the intention is to start with one image and scale it up and down for every possible use, finer details will just muddy up the logo when its real small as a favicon or in the system tray or wherever else. We'll need to remember that we're designing for all sizes, and not just one size.

echo6ix commented 2 years ago

The current "Discord Logo" is the best. It's simple, it can easily be done in SVG, and it scales. Just change the color from brown to white (and a black logo on white backgrounds -- think of logos for big corps, they have dark and light versions based on the context).

The current logo is also ambiguous, and that's good. It's just a box, and that's what a stash is, it's hidden crap usually in a box. Adding a vhs tape or a glow makes it unnecessarily complex and kind of corny.

The only thing I'd change on the current logo is removal of the text that says 'Stash'.

Instead of reworking the logo, create a wordmark with the current logo using a simple webfont.

So it's great that this is an open source project. We can use it for free: https://icons8.com/license

I think the current discord logo is fine, but I'm open to seeing different iterations of it. Removing the "Stash" text on the side is good, because it doesn't scale. However, I don't particularly like the submission with the yellow glow coming out of the box. Maybe put some sort of object or objects in the box. I think VHS, movie reel, or those generic image file icons would work well. Something that symbolizes "media" in the box.

EDIT: After giving it some more thought, I think my issue with the yellow glow submission is more of the lack of black background. The yellow glow probably looks better with a dark background instead of a light background. A light blue glow might also look nice, but that's just a personal color preference.

EDIT2: After seeing the screenshots of the yellow glow icon in #2073, I think it looks good as is.

I used KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) principle and created a simple icon and 2 extra versions based on @kermieisinthehouse's request.

I won't make a designer's sales pitch. It is just a box with stashapp's main UI color theme (kind of 😅 )

How the .ICO files on Windows 10 Dark Theme with "Extra large icons", "Large icons", "Medium icons", "Small icons" and "List" views look like:

Version 1 preview_v1

Version 2 preview_v2

Version 3 preview_v3

Feedback is welcome.

Just as an idea I would like to see what comes up if we detach ourselves from the cardboard box concept. Something like this icons8-tissue-box-64 or this icons8-tissue-box-60 would fit the software and "brand" well without being too explicit as well.

SilentSpartan commented 2 years ago

This is very crude but interested in what people think of a design with a S on the box? Something like that seems “moderny”.

Google image searching “s box logo” comes up with lots of designs incorporating an S into a box but none like the crude one I posted.

philpw99 commented 2 years ago

Maybe from a different angle like this? stash test logo

SilentSpartan commented 2 years ago

It could be a box similar to the first one you posted:

Untitled-1

I prefer the first one I posted though. Again all these are just concepts and not final designs.

sleetx commented 2 years ago

with all of these logo ideas of a box, people may get confused between Stash App and StashDB Stashbox

UncleRoger33 commented 2 years ago

Logo ideas of a box came from the very first comment (https://github.com/stashapp/stash/issues/2049#issue-1059575691)

We shouldn't stray TOO far from the current 'box' concept, and we definitely don't want to convey any adult themes with our logo.

echo6ix commented 2 years ago

I did not make this, but the license allows its use in an app as far as I can tell.

There's a whole bunch of free logos you can generate at sites like FreeLogoDesign that don't require a license or attribution https://editor.freelogodesign.org/?companyName=stash&category=1

Here are a few examples: image image image

echo6ix commented 2 years ago

I like the orange one a lot. I think it covers all the same points I mentioned above. Except for the colour orange and the text.

Caleripo commented 2 years ago

Maybe a chest like this? 7C7C5EDA-268D-47A3-BAEC-861EDAE6C61C

But honestly I personally like the Discord one without text and glow the best.
