I migrated over the blog posts from a large blog to statamic 2 now, and it does work but I had to change the code a tiny bit. I forked it to my profile.
Pictures I imported to asset directory and ran a replace for the URL. YMMV. "Categories" were also replaced with "Tags" the same way.
