Three stages of learning:

1. Stage one happens when the baby is born. From that time they start the process of learning by exploration. ... The baby is learning in a self-directed way.
2. Stage two is learning by told. This stage is reaching its climax in school. I think it is an exaggeration but it is a lot of truth if one said that when you go to school, the trauma is that you must stop learning and you now must accept being taught. That is stage two, it is school, it is learning by being taught, it is deposit. I think may children are destroyed by that, strangled. Some of course survived it and all of us survived it...
3. Stage three is that we, in spite of the school, what happened to us is that in the course of this stage two we learned certain skills, we learned to read for example, we learn to use libraries, we learned now to be able to explore directly a much wider world. There is an important sense that stage three is going back to stage one.

For those who survived stage two, creative people, in a laboratory, in the philosophy seminar, an artist, a business man, a journalist, all the people in the world who are able to, despite of all the school, the restriction in the world we live in, to find a way of living creatively, they are very much like the baby again. We explore, it is driven from inside, it is experiential, it is not so verbal, not so about being told. So now I want to tell a story about my grandson ....

• 第一阶段从出生开始，新生儿通过自己探索外物进行学习，也就是自己给自己找方向。
• 第二阶段是听话阶段。其顶峰是学校教育。我认为虽然有点夸张，但是可以坦白地说上学带来的创伤就是你必须停止“学习”，开始接受“被教育”。 这是第二阶段，去学校，被教育，被灌输。我认为很多孩子就这样被毁掉，被扼杀了。有些人当然生存下来了，在座的我们都生存下来了。
• 第三个阶段是尽管受到了学校的摧残，我们仍在第二阶段里学会了一定的技能，例如阅读、使用图书馆，我们学会了这些为的是，在到达第三阶段时，我们已具备直接探索更广阔世界的能力。因此在这第三阶段，你会感一切又转回到了第一阶段。

那些拥有创造力的人，你可能在实验室里、在哲学研讨会上找到他们，他们还可能是个艺术家、商人、记者.....他们是成功挺过第二阶段的人，抛开学校和各种各样的限制，他们能够找到一个富有创造活力的活法，就像回到了初生时刻一样。我们对世界的探索，源自内在的驱动，跟随经验而非他人的指挥。
