Given that partial verb phrase fronting is discussed only later, it
might be surprising to the reader that what is fronted in (23b)-(23d)
are non-constituents according to the preceding discussion in 2.1.4
(at least if we assume that the trace of the finite verb behaves
syntactically like an overt verb, which is probably the reader's
natural assumption). Perhaps a sentence would be in order that
acknowledges the apparent contradiction and promises that an
explanation is forthcoming?
