I wanted to check this out, ran in to #443 . I hope to get some more work done so this will be easier to implement :)
I've made some progress. Please see Discord for thoughts about this. Here are some results:

In short, feedback was: Animation looks smooth. The turrets do seem a bit flat and light (compared to previous). So would be nice if they could be refined a bit to look a bit more than Dune 2 (darker). The gun turret seems to be almost there (apart from being a bit light). I can imagine the Rocket Turret will take more work.

"so, the 8 facing (OG dune 2 sharpened) are a bit darker and have more shading, thats something I notice from the start"

Dune 2 has 8 facings/angles for a structure. Having 16 (or more) would be a nice improvement to enhance graphical experience without sacrificing too much on the Dune 2 feel.
