As I was doing an upload this a.m. I noticed that there were two semi-identical names for agencies that came up in the popup - "Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority" and "Ann Arbor Area Transit Authority". Only one of those is correct.

The hope would be for some administrative way to remedy this, not sure the precise best way yet.

Seems like two main use cases:

  1. Edit name (for when units or committees change names) - users/moderators would need to personally choose when things should remain under a no longer existing name for historical sake (very different charters, etc) and when they should be changed. Not sure if history would be wanted in this case?
  2. Merge units. When looking at various misspellings or abbreviations, merge them into a single category and remove the empty ones. A view of units and how many documents belong to them could make the deletion a manual process. For summer game administration we have merge as a looking at person and enter the account # you want to merge it into, very basic. In this case might be better to have autocomplete again instead of opening field id to accidental mistypes.

The description by @eby handles the use cases properly, but this is not sufficiently important to have needed to have been updated over the past 3 years. wontfix for now, with a thought that if there's a sudden influx of problems we will have already thought it through.
