Emoji/Unicode handling by old devices, and more: Testers wanted #353

I'm rather unhappy with the current (non-existing to crippled) support of Unicode characters in general, and Emoji in particular. There are rumours that Unicode may cause "some" devices to fail if a GPX containing "some of those" is imported. The problem is that my device base is rather small: When I lost my trusted Garmin Oregon 300 a couple of years ago, I was left with a number of Android smartphones (running c:geo, that's why GeoToad has explicit support for that) and a rather old, but still working, Garmin nüvi 255. I had inherited a number of device templates from older versions of GeoToad, but cannot really support them. List/table, HTML, c:geo GPX, and a few messaging formats are what I actually use and test; I have absolutely no idea what others are still using. Looking at the access counts by goo.gl, about every 1000th c:geo user also might use GeoToad. It's certainly not a well-established piece of software, and with a powerful data plan, there's little use in an "offline" solution to access cache descriptions, for those who have mobile network available. Still there are GPS-capable devices in the wild that aren't connected all the time, and it may still be useful to have something to provide them with the necessary input. I'd like to continue support for them - but I cannot continue focusing on things that have only nostalgic value. In previous versions, there had been a "history" of commandlines. They were never sent off to me though, and at some point the code was removed. Perhaps a poll would do the trick?

Getting back to the starting point: I'm looking for testers, owning "typical" devices which I cannot cover myself. Please get in touch...

Hi there, I'm just downloading a fresh batch of caches with the latest release to put on my Garmin GPS MAP64s. Happy to share results once it finishes if you're interested.

Thanks for your offer - 3.27.2 still hasn't enabled Emoji in comments (logs). Which flavour of GPX would you copy to your device? (AFAICT only the cgeo one makes excessive use of emoji and clickable links, but if it doesn't do any harm to the device it'd be worth trying.)
