Implementing the BagIt specification wouldn't take particularly long, and would allow generated archives to be read in by compatible software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BagIt

I can see why we might want to support Bagit, but what is the justification for making this the standard for MyTardis?

Standardise archive output format to BagIt

The current archive output format follows no particular standard at all. It defaulted to the on-disk directory structure originally, however this changed when datasets could be owned by multiple experiments.

In this particular case, BagIt is simply a convenient format which provides defined behavior and a way to export hash digests along with the files themselves. It could also contain supplemental METS metadata without changing the import behavior in other BagIt applications. This would allow MyTardis to export full experiments with all data and metadata in a single archive - potentially very useful for archiving and backup.
