Stephen Dart (LaRDS petabyte store service manager) has suggested the creation of an interface that facilitates 3rd party transfers between mounted staging areas. This has arisen due to the creation of a 3 tiered storage system - 'data', 'archive (tape)' and 'scratch (hpc)' at Monash University and the need for users to transfer efficiently between them.
It would be an optional app.
This would take advantage of:
Mounted staging area has a close proximity to the MyTardis server at Monash meaning fast transfer rates
No need to pass data through a client machine (such as the user's laptop) to copy files from mount A to mount B
MyTardis' asynchronous task management allowing users to 'set and forget', with an email notification at the end
This would be independent of MyTardis' cataloguing and storage functionality.
