The METS ingest service returns different values depending on the version:
2.5 - returns experiment ID
3.0 - returns absolute file path for placement of files on the target system
Perhaps the synchrotron (and others using the service) need a machine way (such as a simple web service /version) to report the exact version being used, so it can make a call on how to interact with specific installations.
