Hello all,
MJ 584 is a 3-credit Spring semester class that includes an international trip over spring break, and we produce a world-class multimedia project by the end of the semester. Last spring’s project, https://cubasnewwave.unc.edu/ just won in the Online Journalism Awards.
Admission is by permission, and there is an online application that is due by Wednesday Nov. 1. There is also a small fund, the MEJO Global Immersion Fund, available for help with the expenses of the trip, which is also due Nov. 1. See the links to apply for both below.
The design/dev team will be led by Tamara Rice, I will lead the photo/video team, and Kate Sheppard will lead the reporting team. We hope you’ll apply!
WHAT: During Spring Semester 2018, J584 will produce a world-class documentary multimedia project focusing on the aftermath of the devastating 2017 hurricane season in some of the hardest-hit places – most likely Puerto Rico and possibly another storm-ravaged island or south Texas. (Final locations will be determined in the coming weeks.) Students who take part in this class and reporting trip will be producing innovative, multimedia journalism looking at the human and environmental impacts of those storms.
WHEN: Regularly scheduled class in Carroll all semester, with travel to Puerto Rico and possibly a second site over spring break.
WHO: We want to build the best team possible with a WIDE variety of skills. Students from all specialties will be considered.
HOW: Enrollment is controlled and interested students must apply online By Nov 1.
