Variant Digit Heights #22

The digits 0 to 9 in the range U+0030 to U+0039 have varying heights. This is an "error" which for example will be revealed in conjunction with the diacritical mark U+0305 COMBINING OVERLINE. Note that all other digits (U+1D7CE to U+1D7FF) show correct behavior.

This "error" is normal in fonts with numbers. Round elements stick up more than flat ones: it's called "overshoot." Some very thin elements such as the top of the 6 stick up even more. That's normal. At least in Stix General Regular, none of these come close to colliding with the combining overline. I fail to see a problem there. Is it perhaps in a different font of the family?

After reviewing the glyph set we do not feel this is an error. The digits 0030--0039 in Stix General Regular. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 are all of the same dimension: 676 PS units high with an 'undershoot' of 14 units for 0, 3, 8. The 5 is 688 units high because of the right hand top serif; 6 is 684 units as the top extends 8 units. This is the same with 9 where the bottom extends also 8 units more that the 14 units of the other digits. The 7 is a touch shorter because of the flat top (662 units). We do not think that these small differences in sizes are an 'error', but are a matter of design. The bold figures 1D7CE--1D7FF are of a different design. Here 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 are all 688 units high, the round bottom characters with an undershoot of 13 units; 5 and 7 are 676 units because of their flat tops.
