[side note: I'd love for us to eventually stop using "VPN" for things that don't encrypt the data passing over them. This doesn't seem like the right place to start, though.]

I've closed this one. IMHO - the definition war for VPN was lost long ago. VPN does not mean encrypted but only private.
The security guys have a point, but the lost the war for the term long ago and far away in a distant IDR land.
