Status of repository owner #618

To everyone who'd like to know status of this project and its future: @stoically, its maintainer, who was my dear coworker, unfortunately passed away during January :(

Opening any pull requests or making any new issues on this repository is sadly pointless, because I highly doubt there will be possibility to add a new maintainer. If anyone wants to continue, I'm afraid that fork is the only option.

Condolences to you and the family!

I am so very sad to learn of this tremendous loss. Please allow me to express my most sincere and heartfelt condolences.

@stoically was always a pleasure to interact with on this project. Friendly, talented, and thoughtful are three wonderful qualities that come to mind with ease when thinking of @stoically.

Some of you may know that we also lost another loved and talented extension developer recently: Einar Egilsson, the creator of Redirector. I have offered to help keep Redirector alive, largely in a management role. @kate-shine If you or anyone else has access to this repo's credentials, I am willing to do the same for this project. If not, I am willing to help with someone else's fork or even use my existing fork if no one else is interested.

One of the biggest challenges with keeping this project alive is that 99.9% of the amazing work was performed by @stoically. For that, and for all the time I had the privilege of interacting with @stoically online, I feel much gratitude. Thank you @stoically. You are already missed. Rest well, friend. Rest well.

Thank you for your kind words and offer <3

We are currently trying to find out if there is someone close to him who will manage his legacy. If there is no one else, and we manage to get confirmation from court, I will try to provide all necessary documents to Github to be able to gain access and look for successors on his projects, or at least put a notice to Readme of those where it won't be possible.

@Elendil211 what are you talking about? Are you sure it was commits in this repo? Right now there are no commits from this year in any branch of this repo.

Elendil211 commented 1 year ago

My bad, I was just stupid. I misread "Feb 20" as "February 2020". Sorry.

hey there @kate-shine,

first of all, my condolences on your loss. i know this is an older post, but i hope you and your other coworkers are doing well. as an extensive user of this add-on, this saddens me to hear.

i'm assuming @stoically likely did not setup a successor for this repo otherwise this issue likely wouldn't have been opened. if that's the case, github does have a deceased user policy you may like to read through. i'm not sure if you or anyone else is even interested in jumping through these hoops to either transfer ownership of this code to another account so that development can continue, but i thought i'd offer it as an option just in case. i can't speak for github itself on what they'll ultimately end up doing, but it doesn't hurt to try.

if there is a community fork where development is continuing and that is the preferred method for reviving this project, i would encourage the maintainers to post a link to their fork.

for those watching this thread, i would encourage you setup a successor to your account especially if you're the sole maintainer of a widely used code base. this eventuality is not something we really want to think about, but the unexpected can happen at any time in this life.

again, sorry for your loss, and i hope this doesn't reopen some old wounds.

let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

R.I.P. @stoically! One of the best browser extensions ever made, i hope this work won't be lost.

Thank @stoically for this wonderful project and my condolences to him and his family and friends near and far.

If I can arrange time, I would like to continue this project with everyone.... I have been attached to it for a long time,.... and many things have changed that have broken some functions, or make it incompatible with other addons (which I'm using with Side Bery).
