name clashes between Gargoyle and vanilla interpreters #83

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
like discussed in issue 75, the names of terps binaries clash with
non-Gargoyle binaries. it should be possible, for example, to place both
vanilla Frotz and Gargoyle Frotz in the same directory. i.e. /usr/bin on
most Linux systems.

would it be possible to rename the terps to denote their connection with
Gargoyle? this would remove the need for /usr/libexec, and the separate
_APPDIR and _BINDIR variables, allow for placing terps binaries, Gargoyle
launcher, and vanilla interpreters in the same directory, avoid the
symlinking hassle, and make packaging, distribution, and usage much easier
and standards-compliant. basically, this would reduce the confusion from
having different programs with the same names.

I am considering this, but would like to hold off and see what the general
consensus
from the package maintainers is after the 20090825 release tomorrow.

If the symlinks and build variables are not sufficient to ease the burden on
packagers, I'll see about renaming the interpreters.
