Remove pre-master branch #42

The pre-master branch is no longer used and has fallen behind master multiple times in the last 6 months. Maybe it would make sense to remove it completely?

I had indeed planned to kill it off for the same reason. This issue serves well to document the reasons behind. Away it goes
