It's more about convinience. If you are the maintainer of an open source library and are swamped with tasks hitting you from all directions. Looking for an open source alternative to discord is just not in your priority list.
Moving users over would also be a challenge. Building community isn't easy.
I'm extatic new solutions to discord exist though!

I don't think discord is bad it is just proprietary.
proprietary services tend to change the owner, their policies and make it very hard to switch the service without losing content. And you have to "sign" a contract with them to use the service and waive rights.
So why not using matrix instead? It is mature now and as a perk you have more ways to organize conversations and a low priority idle mode for rooms.
