Perhaps reducing the gain by a factor of 2 would be sufficient.
It might be possible to obtain a non-saturated reading of highly fluorescent wells by pulsing the LEDs very briefly. (Either as a single pulse or a low duty cycle on a PWM LED illumination program which the ADC and photodiode integrate over.)
Here's the result of an experiment we just ran. As can be seen, some the fluorescence values are saturated. This is likely from exceeding the dynamic range of the sensor as we are using it. It would be good if they didn't saturate.
