My feeling (unconfirmed) is that running in Octave is substantially slower than MATLAB. This should be fixed!

I just tested the speeds: 44 seconds in MATLAB (R2006a) and 138 seconds in Octave (3.2.3) for the test dataset in this repository.

This isn't a problem for us in practice, so I'm closing this issue.
