I only see the master branch. Is there a more active fork that we should be using?

Not to my knowledge. I forked the original markdown repo to add redcarpet markdown support when I still used Textmate / Sublime. As long as you're confident the change is solid, I'll happily merge :smiley:

yeah, pretty confident. It was tested on an out-of-the-box Mavericks install.
