this returns the apt_widget, not the apt_widget_button

I faced a similar struggle and submitted https://github.com/streetturtle/awesome-wm-widgets/pull/435 which was recently merged.

Do you think, this PR is needed? If so, there would be merge conflicts to resolve.

yes, I think your merge does everything necessary.
