Remove [work-in-progress]? #169

Closed swanson closed 10 years ago

swanson commented 11 years ago

I've been using Stringer as my fulltime reader for about a month now - and we've got a month to go before Google Reader shutdowns.

Is anything missing before I remove the [work-in-progress] label? Full Reeder API support? Our own API? Categories/labels?

content search

For me, a grouping / categories / folder feature for feeds is missing, including the option to browse entries of groups and a single feed. basically what is already been requested in #124 and #46

+1 for #124

A simple, visual integration of the feature would be the following (personally, i would prefer 2 or 3 column layout with folders in the left column, items right etc., but that would be a major change, so instead i think the following can provide additional functionality without deep changes to the layout)

Right beside the "refresh" button, a filter-dropdown/menu could be located. Default would be "all" or "no filter", and in the dropdown you can select your single feeds. ordered in before the feeds would be your groups, a click on the group filters for feeds in the group. mouseover the groupd would open a 2nd level menu with the feeds in that group. again, a click on a single feed filter for entries of that feed.

same could apply in the archive, so that one could browse all (read) items of o single feed or group...

Created the following quick mockup for demonstration (i'm not a designer ;) ), but i think the idea is recognizable...

(just imagine instead of the ugly filter-button, there would be a small button that fits beside the "reload" button...)

+1 for search, elastic search is pretty good

Is there a feature to import Google Reader feeds into stringer?

christianschmidt commented 11 years ago

@tnguyen14 yes

swanson commented 11 years ago

@tnguyen14 Yes you will be prompted when you first run the app - or you can go to /feeds/import if you skipped importing.

As far as I'm concerned, I would say that adding support for feed grouping / filtering is a must-have.

Not so sure how it relates to #124, but what I mean is provide the ability to group unread posts for a given feed, e.g. "My feed (14)" where 14 refers to the number of unread items, and a click on this entry unfold / redirect to a page that gives a list which only contains entries from this feed, sorted by date, with unread items higlighted.

When dealing with a large number of feeds, this is (to me) an absolute pre-requisite.

I would say that introducing folders (#46) is a nice-to have.

:+1: #46 #124 Without this I would miss 99% of my important feeds. Since I'm subscribed to Hacker News, and I usually just scan through them to find something interesting and then mark all as read. But without this I can't just say mark all as read and be done, since then I would miss all my important feeds.

I think we can safely remove "[work-in-progress]". I've been using Stringer for several months now and I'm under the impression that all essential features are present. Grouping and search would still be nice to have, but I've managed to get by without them.

Koronen commented 10 years ago

@swanson any new thoughts on this? Should we keep this issue open?

swanson commented 10 years ago

I'm not personally interested in groups nor has anyone purposed an approach that I've liked. Have not seen much continued desire for search/folders and per feed filtering was added, so I'll remove WIP.
