Another batch of cleanups extracted from the docker runner PR that can be reviewed and merged ahead of time.

@sam-github I figured out the log-dump problem... the waiton() check was dependant on the old status format. I've added a fixup commit that checks to see that worker 1 is actually showing up in the status output.
