Minor improvements #182

While working on integrating more features I stumbled over those minor improvements and modifications.

Feel free to take whatever you like of it.

Especially the default-logger specific part of the "return early ... log" commit is a bit how should I say ... I don't know if that's really good ... but it was the best way to minimize CPU usage without breaking the existing logger interface.

Please read all commit messages as well.
