Make components unique / "re-number"

I do a lot of copy paste when I design my circuits and thus ends up with five 
R4 and three C6 and so on. A function to "re-number" components would be great.

I would love for it to be rule based such that components are numbered based on 
the first leg found from left to right and top to bottom but I suspect some 
would like it to be top to bottom and then left to right (hope that makes 
sense).

i.e. left to right, top to bottom

1 3
2 4

and top to bottom, left to right

1 2
3 4
