No coding today, but I came across this interesting blog post on KDnuggets about Zillow's failed home flipping business. Apparently, the ML model wasn't able to adequately predict the price point they should buy the homes at in order to make a profit. This combined with delays in renovations because of the supply chain issues caused by the pandemic led to them being unable to sell many of the homes for a profit. They lost $300 million on the project and their stock price tanked. Just goes to show that AI/ML is not a magic pill. If you don't apply the right domain knowledge and refresh your data, you can easily fly into the ground.
Apparently, this also resulted in 2,000 layoffs (a 25% reduction in their workforce)! Amazing. GeekWire Zillow layoffss
