I have made all the above and other changes. They are correctly separated in each commit in a simplified way.

I have some free time and would like to work on this project. Please help me by approving the changes we agreed to make.

@BrunoMine I am sorry I have neglected this for so long but I am now in the process of updating my released mods for minetest 5.0.0. I will merge this for now, however, you can expect much of it to be replaced with the changes I have planned.

I will keep the optional 'unloaded item' idea, thanks for your efforts.
