Reconsider (and unify) branding and advertising. #97

This issue is a

Please describe the current behavior, and explain why it's bad.

The slogans, titles, and phrases used to promote Tusk are inconsistent across its various platforms.

@mentallurg has argued that titles and branding is intentionally misleading users @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keepass-tusk/reviews/

Please describe how you think it should change.

Open for discussion. @mentallurg, I would welcome a respectful discussion based on fact because I know that Tusk is inconsistent in its naming. I'm a developer by trade and have little experience promoting products, but I believe strongly (and can provide evidence in the code) that Tusk is not an import-once application.

Anything else?

Let's get to the bottom of this.

Goals for this issue:

I've just started using Tusk & thought I'll come offer feedback. While I don't have specific suggestion for the problems you've mentioned, I do think they're real problems. As a developer myself, I can also relate to your experience of this.

My primary concern would be with name. Tusk (found via comment on chrome store) doesn't really tell me anything. If somebody hadn't mentioned it in CKP comments, I wouldn't have found it despite having tried a few times. It was there in the search results but much lower than I expected and the name itself didn't get me to click on it.

So perhaps the title rename could be something like: Tusk - Keepass Autofill Service? Since I'm a developer myself, I'm going to be bad at these suggestions but hopefully more folks will slowly come over and more helpful suggestions.

Another thought on title rename: perhaps Tusk shouldn't be dropped from title completely (since you have some userbase right now & word of mouth would suffer if Tusk is dropped completely from title something I'd personally put a high value on given the relative age of extension)

Tusk is different than other awesome projects like Kee and KeePassHTTP-connector in that it is a self-contained KeePass implementation. It's not just a thin http client, but can pull your database from cloud storage and open it all by itself. This is the main thing I want a title to emphasize, and I don't know how to do it.

Some of the things that I want a title to explain:

I also want a title to explain the limitations:

I don't know how to get those across in a responsible way. I really appreciate your input.

I'm leaning toward KeePass Tusk - Password Access and Autofill as a title

I just also recalled another point: I found the referred comment in original issue @ firefox extensions page really hostile. I think his attack on your use of word "modern" should be ignored.

Reality is, KeePass may be alive and well but that doesn't make it a Modern project. I know because this is what I do for a living & I went looking for KeePass's code in the hope they had a backing engine separate from UI implementation which is super dated.

My intention was to offer them a newer WPF based UI for the desktop implementation while working off the exiting mature engine but as it stands, it's a huge monolithic WinForm codebase that has no easy separation of concern for the sort of thing I wanted to do (admittedly I didn't spend too much time on it once I realised I was looking at a winforms project).

Tusk is definitely something that leans towards modern / recent era UI trends. The only thing that you could perhaps move towards is the Material UI (or perhaps Fluent interface specifications from Microsoft that I haven't seen much of yet) which will not only enhance your overall UI, it will also let you brand your extension as a Material extension and I doubt anybody can challenge the use of that keyword otherwise their very argument of modern UI shows off their ignorance.

Thank you for saying so. That reviewer has really gotten under my skin and I'm looking for ways to be more explicit about the promises that Tusk makes in advertising.

I definitely think they raise some overall valid points about being unclear in the title and description, but Tusk is my first real user-facing product and I never expected someone to hate it so emphatically.
