the developers are basically redeveloping subgraph os so its unlikely they will fix any of the growing bugs on this iteration of subgraph os

We'll be releasing an early release of the new SGOS (well, Citadel) and will be soliciting user participation. Would be great to have all of you trying it out. Some of the things you expect from SGOS-classic will be available, but not all. What we're doing is the right thing to do; it's better.

I still want to use subgraphOS so I found a workaround. It means reducing security but if you use a normal linux kernel instead of the subgraph grsec kernel, torbrowser works. To do this I installed:

sudo apt install linux-image-4.9.0-6-amd64

Then I rebooted the computer and at the GRUB menu, selected Advanced Options and then selected the linux-image-4.9.0-6-amd64 kernel. It booted and torbrowser works! :)

By the way, anyone reading this later should consider which is the most recent normal linux kernel available to her at the time rather than just installing 4.9.0.6.
