Main Article → article
- Font Matter → front
- Title → article-title
- Authors → contrib-group
- Abstract → abstract
  - Abstract subsection 1 → section
  - Abstract subsection 2 → section
- eLife digest? → abstract[abstract-type=executive-summary]
  - Custom abstract subsection 1 → section
  - Custom abstract subsection 2 → section
- Main Text → body
- Introduction → section
- Results → section
- Back Matter → back
- Acknowledgements → section[section-type=acknowledgements]
- Data Availability Statement → section[section-type=das]
- Footnotes → fn-group
- References → ref-list
Decision Letter → sub-article
Author Response → sub-article

Reasoning:

TOC is optimised for editing, and to quickly navigate the article (that's why we proposed Front Matter, Main Article, Back Matter as top level sections for clarity)

The following requirements should be fulfilled:

Only one top level section can be active (Main Article OR Decision Letter OR Author Response)
All article content should be easy to navigate.

Optimisations (optional for now):

If no sub-articles are there, we can leave out "Main Article" entry

Actions:

[ ] Add placeholders for authors list, footnotes, references (when no items are there)
