The is the previous pull request to add unit tests but with bugs fixed

@MarkPlatts can you get MarkPlatts::prerefactortest to the same commits at the suchestoncampbelllab:master. I think that should help me resolve these branch conflicts. Thank you!!

@aarizvi I've merged the master branch with prerefactortest and pushed changes to the pull request. Let me know if this fixes things for you.
