Time to perform the 1.2.0 release, slightly overdue.

All done except announcing the release via the mailing list - waiting for the 
artifacts to arrive on Maven Central.

I have tried to improve the release process a bit, but that only worked out 
half like I wanted. I hoped that when I regenerate the API docs during the 
release:prepare stage, the would automatically be committed to the tag - but 
they are not. Still I think the changes improve the process because it is not 
necessary to manually edit the POM to set the version and manually revert that 
change afterwards.
