Ability to store items probably isn't a consideration, but maybe to pickup a placed object from an object.
Another perspective would be to have an objective wait until all objects are within the objective, then have the player submit using F (PC) or Button X (Xbox). Not direct inventory management but a focus on player interaction and freedom to move objects after they have been placed.
