Exhibits landing page redesign, part 3 #1838

Open ggeisler opened 4 years ago

The new landing page design doesn't address the following use cases:

@jvine and I have discussed some rough ideas for how we might support those use cases by extending the current landing page design, but haven't yet done any real work on the design.

Here are two alternate designs that address the first use case above:

Version 1 #1842 Uses a popup to present item search and exhibit title typeahead together, with a single search box. User doesn't have to decide in advance what type of search to do; will start seeing title results in response to any search. This version is potentially more extensible than version 2.

Version 2 #1843 Uses a button dropdown to switch modes for the search box. User has to know what they are searching for and needs to take an action to expose the alternate mode. Similar to patterns we've used elsewhere; may be simpler to implement in the short term.

The second use case is not addressed:

We've discussed some ideas around an interactive date slider as a visualization tool, or something more integrated into the home page rather than a search-specific feature. To pursue this idea, we'd want to explore alternatives to the current date slider. I'm not intending to address this further just now.

Given we've completed the Exhibits workcycle, I think it's reasonable to consider the second use case (exposing the date range slider on the landing page somehow) a future concern (part of Exhibits landing page redesign, part 4) and so I'm removing the design needed label from this ticket.
