High battery usage over night

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. The screen must be kept on to record data (bug 3708)
2. Tasker app can be used to keep screen on without USB debugging turned on
3. After 100% charge, start app, look at battery usage

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The battery charge was decreased by a significant amount.
One method of using Tasker locks the screen but also keeps the screen on. This 
method provides unreliable sleep data

Which phone model do you have?
HTC Desire on Froyo

Please provide any additional information below.

I have the same issue. I do not like that the screen must stay on and drain the 
battery all night. It is almost enough for me to stop using it. I have an iPad3.
