I can confirm this.

I have always been running CFG from my USB drive without an SD Card.
I have checked ALL of my config files, and every FS reference is to USB.

However, trying to rip a GC game with the latest r35 defaults to SD ripping.
If I take the SD out, it still tries to rip to SD, even though it sees 0.0GB of
0.0GB free.

I am using DIOS MIOS v2.0, and CFG Loader Mod is set to use DML Type: DM.

Here is a patch and a compiled version (the base is r35) where you can rip GC
games to your USB-drive if the DML-mode is set to DM.

The patch also includes my patch of issue 22.

Integrate it into r36 and you're good to go!

One question: are games automatically compressed, or will I have to run it
through DiscEX to shrink them?

I'm sorry, but I can't because I'm no developer of cfg-loader(-mod) and am just
committing patches for fun.

The games are, for what I can tell, not shrinked in any way.

Here is a patched version of my patch.

It fixes two bugs in the previous version:
1) If a game is already installed it would've just installed it again.
2) The free space of the HDD is now displayed correctly.

I was wondering why my free space didn't change after ripping 19 games...

Why don't you become a contributor? You obviously know what you're doing.

Thanks for the fixes, baka0815.
I will include it soon.
If you want svn access just send me a mail: softwiiv2@gmail.com (speak you
german?, I saw the ".de" ;))

Yes, I'm German. Thanks for the offer, but I don't want to get write-access to
the SVN. I'm very fine committing patches from time to time.
