I would be in favour of running a sunpy workshop - it would benefit most in community and I'd imagine that lots of people from the community would attend incl. postgrad students, and we could also invite some instrument teams and other developers (promote affiliated packages)
Having a dedicated workshop would also be great to get new community members contributing to sunpy as we could have a dedicated session on how to raise issues, open a PR, hands on (incl how the tests run etc).
The idea of a contributor prize is nice, but it could also be something that is given out as cudos or a token rather than a cash prize? something that could go on website and that persons CV?
The AAS SPD division have given the SunPy project a small amount of money to be spent on things to help sunpy and the project, iirc this is of the order of $2,000.
