Actually, I am able to set as many workspace names as I desire using
dconf-editor /org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/workspace-names
For some reason switchworkspace only displays the first four. By contrast, the workspaceMatrix extension is able display the additional names, proving that display is possible.
I much prefer your UI and hence hope that you can remove this limitation.
With GNOME 43.9, Debian 12 Bookworm you can use the GNOME built-in GUI to increase the number of workspace to 16 or maybe more. I tested only up to 16.
To increase the number of workspaces, using GNOME, navigate to Settings ---> Multitasks ---> Workspace ---> Number of workspaces
The challenge with many workspaces is that they are all display on one line. So you need to scroll either left or right. Presently, you can't scroll up or down. This would a useful new feature. I mean display the workspace on a grid and scroll up, down, left, right across all of them. I created a ticket for this suggested feature at https://github.com/sunwxg/gnome-shell-extension-switchworkspace/issues/8
Could this extension support 9 workspace names?
