Enhancements to build file #4

I put together a patch for the build file that sets up all the paths near the 
top and uses 'location' rather than 'value'.  This should make it a bit easier 
to maintain, as there is no need to do a search and replace if e.g. a directory 
name changes.

I submit this patch in the hopes it will be useful.

The patch also includes the option to set the image files used by the example 
target with -D options.
