Request a "concession" from Rocket.Chat #7

For educative and open source projects: https://rocket.chat/concession.

We need to prepare a request letter. As an example, this is the request for "partnership" that I sent to Discord a while ago:

Hello,

We are a team of students, academics and knowledge enthusiasts working on an open source education project called SuperMemo Assistant.

Our desire is to make learning both pleasurable and efficient, and to help shaping a society where curiosity and knowledge is the privilege of all its members.

The web pages for our project can be found at:

We are experimenting with different communication platforms to host our community. One of our requirement is that our discussion platform be accessible from this url: https://chat.supermemo.wiki/.

Discord already meets most of our criterias, and many of us are in fact regular user already. A SuperMemo Discord server was opened in 2018 and currently hosts over 400 users. With the administrator being busy, we would like to create a new, official server for our project.

SuperMemo has a large user base (over a million: https://supermemo.guru/wiki/Exponential_adoption_of_spaced_repetition). However, for historical reasons, its community has been lacking due to the lack of a central Agora, so to say. With the advent of the SuperMemo Discord server in 2018, we have seen a continuous stream of new users growing our ranks with shared enthusiasm.

We would like to continue that adventure with Discord and apply for a partner status. We have taken note of the Community Guidelines as well as the Terms of Service, and we believe that our community qualifies.

The option to apply for Partnership appears to be currently unavailable. We would like to quickly move forward with building our community, as our main project "SuperMemo Assistant", which is being developed since 2018, is going to enter its open beta-testing phase.

It has also been brought to our attention that the Partner status might be revokable. As this would disable our ability to direct our community to the permanent link https://chat.supermemo.wiki/, we would like to understand if there exists a solution that would give us some confidence in the continuity of this status.

We appreciate any time you might set aside for our project.

Please feel free to add our tags: Alexis.Inco#8606 and Naess#3880. We are available for chatting at your convenience.

Kind regards, Alexis & the SMA team

I think with a bit of editing this could work (ripped a lot of it from Alexis' letter since its written so well):

Subject: Concessions for Open Source Project Message:

Hello, We are a team of students, academics, and knowledge enthusiasts working on an open-source education project called SuperMemo.wiki. SuperMemo.wiki works on both a documentation half and an application half. The application we are working on, SuperMemo Assistant, works in conjunction with the spaced repetition app SuperMemo (https://supermemo.guru/wiki/What_is_SuperMemo%3F) and allows for the creation of plugins to add functionality. The documentation half is meant both to explain the usage of SuperMemo assistant but also to provide a better introduction and starting point for new users to SuperMemo. Our dream with SuperMemo.wiki is to make learning more efficient and pleasurable for as many people as we can.

Till now, we've been using a discord server with more than a hundred users for our communication needs (https://discord.gg/vUQhqCT). However, discord is blocked in China, making it challenging to work with SuperMemo users there. As such, we searched for a new communication solution and decided on a self-hosted rocket.chat instance as it is the best option in terms of functionality and cost. The only issue we face is the limit on push notifications for the community plan. As an open-source project, we'd like to request concessions.

On our GitHub (https://github.com/supermemo/), we currently have six members though there are many more contributors helping us with testing, feedback, and issues.

Our Discord server (https://discord.gg/vUQhqCT) is also quite active with more than a hundred members.

Our main site is here: https://sma.supermemo.wiki/

We hope that you can help us achieve a more global SuperMemo community with better learning for all.

Kind regards,
Alexis & the SMA team,
