When picking a color, it seems like only a narrow range of values corresponds to frequently used red, green and blue colors, and a wide range corresponds to colors between blueish purple and magenta, to different shades of yellow, and to all colors around cyan.
Colors copied from screenshots of Tux kart of the corresponding values (not the most reliable source, I know):
Same thing but I crossed circles with color from gimp that corresponds to the same hue:
Drawbacks:
Inability to choose a color close to a pure color but slightly different from it (e.g. when pure red is 0 and 2 is orange there's not much room for something in between), in other words, some neighboring colors are too far from each other
Large ranges of colors can be perceived as almost the same color, e.g. all colors from 38 to 49 can be described as "cyan but with a bit of green", in other words, some neighboring colors are too close to each other
Generally it would be good to change before saturation or lightness are added to the kart color
